Body Composition Sites

Chest
Probe orientation - diagonal, parallel to the crease of the underarm.
  • For men, place probe 1/2 the distance between the anterior axillary line (crease of the underarm) and nipple. 
  • For women, 1/3 the distance. Have women subjects lift right bra strap with the left hand. 
Back (Subscapular)
 Probe orientation - diagonal, parallel to the inferior angle of scapula.
  1. Have subject place right arm behind their lower back.
  2. Locate the inferior angle of the scapula. 
  3. Have subject return right arm to original relaxed position
  4. Acquire image 1 - 2 cm below the inferior angle of the scapula.  
Arm (Triceps)
Probe orientation - vertical
  • Image is acquired halfway between the acromion (shoulder) and olecranon process (elbow) on the posterior midline of the arm.  
Upperside (Midaxillary)
Probe orientation - vertical
  1. Have subject elevate right arm to shoulder level/parallel to floor. 
  2. Image is acquired 1 - 2 cm posterior of the midaxillary line (below the armpit) at the level of the xiphoid process of the sternum (breastbone).
Lowerside (Suprailliac)
Probe orientation - diagonal, parallel to the angle of the iliac crest.
  • Image is acquired 2 cm superior to the iliac crest. 
Stomach (Abdomen)
Probe orientation – vertical
  • Image is acquired 2 cm to the right of the umbilicus (belly button).
Thigh (Quadriceps)
Probe orientation - vertical
  • Image is acquired on the anterior midline of the thigh midway between the proximal border of the patella (upper knee) and the inguinal crease (groin).
